The now empty chairs at the 2006 World Series of Poker haven’t had enough time to cool off before the problems start. Where did those extra millions in chips originate? In reality it represents the buy-in money from more than two hundred phantom players. The party line coming out of Harrah’s is they went into the pot during chip-ups when smaller denomination chips are removed from the game and odd numbers of chips are rounded up. Could this account for the difference? According to Richard Brodie…No. For those not familiar with Richard Brodie he is one of the original Microsoft people and a man that is taken quite seriously when he criticizes. Now, Brodie has come down hard on the 2006 WSOP and you can read all about it on his blog, Lion’s Tales.
The word in the street says there are many in the professional poker player crowd not happy with this year’s tournament and some are already considering alternatives. Much grumbling about the staggering sums of money the players paid Harrah’s for the privilege of playing on their WSOP TV show. Throw in the hundreds of disgruntled dealers and the shut-out working media and it’s easy to see a real mess brewing before next year. Add in the sudden federal shift to enforce existing federal statures through arrest and prosecution of key figures in the Internet gambling business and the picture for 2007 really becomes cloudy. It could be a 2007 main event with 10,000 plus players and there might be no main event at all.
