Day 5 of the WPT Championships at the Bellagio began with 27 players who were all hoping to survive the day and advance to the final TV table. With a $4 million first place prize at stake, the mood was intense as the last 27 players slugged it out in the longest day of action so far at the WPT Championships. Paul Lee from Los Angeles, CA started the day as the chipleader while Phil Hellmuth and Carlos Mortensen were chasing history. A WSOP Main Event winner has never won a WPT World Championship. Mortensen and Hellmuth were the two best players left in the mix, but Hellmuth busted out in 18th place as Mortensen’s chance is still alive as he advanced to the final TV table.

The Buzz

The Fontana Room was packed with media reps, fans, spectators, pros who busted out, and family members of the remaining players. Everyone wanted to see who would make the final table and stayed extremely late to see who made it. Those six included… Paul Lee, Carlos Mortensen, Guy Laliberte, Mike Wattel, Tim Phan, and Kirk Morrison. Thomas Wahlroos from Finland bubbled off the final table when he lost the largest pot of the tournament to Paul Lee after his As-10s lost to Lee’s Ad-Qs.

The Back Story

Phil Hellmuth started the WPT Championships in true Hellmuthian fashion by showing up ninety minutes late. He jawed back and forth with Jamie Gold before losing over 6K in prop bets. By the end of Day 3, Hellmuth was the chipleader but he failed to protect his lead on Day 4 as he coughed it up. The Phil Hellmuth Show came to an abrupt end on Day 5 after he busted out in 18th place. Although the Poker Brat showed up a few minutes late on Thursday, he doubled up on the first hand that he played. He lost a big pot when his Kings were cracked and went on slight tilt. He would be unable to regain his composure and failed to catch any cards.

Sight of the Day

Carlos Mortensen is a true artist. Perhaps he wanted to be an architect or maybe he was influenced by Antoni Gaudi’s buildings such as La Sagrada Familia. When he gets bored at the tables, he’ll stack his chips in unique designs. He made several on Day 5. At one point, he had to tear down his masterpiece to count down his chips when he moved all in. Tommy Vu was bothered by his craftmanship and complained, “He’s not allowed to build a house no more!”

Quote of the Day

“I’m playing against the best player in the world. I need time to think,” Tommy Vu said after Phil Hellmuth called a clock on him for taking too long to make a decision.

Hand of the Day

Kirk Morrison cracked Phil Hellmuth’s pocket Kings which set the Poker Brat on tilt for several minutes. We here at LasVegasVegas agree that Hellmuth played his hand poorly and even the best NL Hold’em player in the world got way too fancy. Morrison raised 75K preflop and Hellmuth smooth called with Ks-Kh. Mistake number 1. The flop was 6s-5c-3s and Morrison fired out 150K. Hellmuth smooth called again with a flush draw and gutshot on the board. Mistake number 2. The turn was the 3d and Morrison checked to Hellmuth who under bet the pot with 150K when there was 450K in there. Mistake number 3. Morrison called that weak bet. The river was the 2s and Morrison bet 225K and got Hellmuth to call. Morrison showed As-7s for the nut flush, while Hellmuth angrily showed his pocket Kings. As they’d say on 2+2… “Poorly played on all streets!”
